Reflection

My experiences in ENG 2003

My overall experience with ENG2003 was quite pleasant. I got to learn how to develop and enhance my communication skills. To be honest it was my first time making some of the assignments we were tasked with, for example, assignment 1. I have read about and looked at many cover letter examples but, I have never had one of my own, it was great practice for me before having to do co-op. I also learned the principles of effective communication in engineering, including how to write a technical report for term project 1, give presentations (assignment 4 and tutorials) and communicate with our audience (Assignments 2 and 3) Finally, I also made many friends over the semester during lectures and tutorials, with a good feeling that I will be seeing them with me next year.

During the first lecture of the semester, the professor was talking about how we will be able to express ourselves better with not just our classmates but with our future employers and friends. With this information and not reading the course syllabus at the time, I expected the course to have more projects with live presentations or oral exams/assignments. We did, however, get two different assignments (assignments 2 and 4) which had us presenting with our faces in front of the camera and I very much enjoyed those assignments because they took me out of my comfort zone. In short most of the content in the course was to be expected except for the amount of writing which was a little surprising to me.
Even though they are so simple the 7cs and 9 axioms of communications have to be the easiest thing to forget if not practised often.

In my opinion I think they are the most useful content in the course. They set a standard to your writing or way of communication that makes you seem professional and credible. It is like a checklist or rubric on how for example an email should be sent or a cover letter should be written or how a speech should be presented. Nevertheless there are many other content that I did find useful or educational, like week 7 Editing and feedback which made me realise how important it is to give good critical feedback to let the person know where he ended up making mistakes. Another example would be week 9 technical graphics which was showing how we can tweak numbers into our favour and the difference in graphs.

There were a few topics that I found interesting in the course like week 8 digital and professional correspondence where I learned a few things about emails that I didn’t know before, to be more specific bcc and cc. I knew a little bit about cc which is sending the same email to multiple people with all of them knowing who this email has been sent to, but I didn't know anything about bcc where you can privately send the same email to someone without the other person knowing. Another topic that I found interesting was week 10 oral presentations. I have always been fond of great presentations but seem to lack the experience and nature of having a great speech voice. For example, in first year engineering we talked a lot about Steve jobs apple presentation. There were so many points in his presentation that we spent the whole 2 hour class talking about it. In the end I think week 10 helped me improve my presentations.

My growth and development as an effective communicator.

I believe that my communication skills before ENG2003 were abysmal. I have always been an introvert that doesn't like talking to people other than close friends and family members. It was and still is a little difficult for me to communicate with other people in my everyday life. However, after taking ENG2003 we had many opportunities to be able to communicate with peers that I have never seen before, this pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me to make more friends. Coincidentally for the first semester this year I made probably only 1-2 friends but after taking ENG2003 I actually have made many more connections with not just peers but fellow university students around campus, even branching out to some friends from my elective courses like Canadian government. Lastly, I feel like ENG2003 has made me come out of my shell and be a little more present in my campus life.

In my opinion the most important communication skill that I have improved on is oral communication or presentations. From taking the course I think it has made me open up more and feel more confident about myself. When presenting or speaking with peers eye contact is much better and there are less filler words when talking. Most importantly, starting a conversation with others was personally a huge step for me that I have achieved during the semester.

Report writing or any type of writing is still difficult for me and is still a communication skill that I need to improve on. Going into engineering seemed like a great idea for me because I never fancied writing and loved numbers. I do see the importance of being able to have persuasive communication in writing and that is why I need to work on it even after this course is over. One more communication skill that I think I need to work on is the way that I talk. I still use a lot of filler words in between sentences during presentations or meetings, it is a bad habit that I will need to break in order for me to bring my communication skills up.

The experiences that I have received in this course have already changed my approach to other engineering courses before this semester has ended. Firstly, reflecting on different mistakes that I have made throughout the year and giving feedback to other peers that are making the same mistakes. Secondly, persuasive and oral presentations came in handy for my elective course, the Canadian government. Where I have an oral exam and research poster assignment. Finally, I will indefinitely be using the 7 C’s and 9 axioms of Communication in the future. Before any important report or any engineering meetings. I will make sure I am prepared and have checked my presentation with the standard 7Cs and 9 axioms of communication. I cannot explain enough how important these 2 simple things are during any presentation.
